I walked in on to the Dutch hospital Colombo shopping complex about two days ago on an early morning and decided, why not have my breakfast from the closest cafe possible?
So I walked in to Java lounge with a friend of mine, and we decided on having two on two toasts. She gets the scrambled eggs with toast, and I get the fried eggs with toast.
The fried eggs and toast consisted of two slices of toast, two fried eggs, two chicken sausages, a hash brown paired with a slice of tomato and salad leaves. (LKR 850)
I honestly didn’t enjoy this two on two because there was so much oil on the hash brown, that the oil dripped out of my hands and it wasn’t worth the mess even though it ticked all the right boxes of being crispy and delicious.
The sausages were well dealt with because they were just the way I liked - plain pan fried.
The toast was super crispy, I had to BREAK the bread with my hands and I couldn’t even slice it with my knife and fork.
The eggs were fried into a sunny side up egg and there were two eggs. The eggs were super sloppy, and It was so bland ( is that a thing about eggs), they don’t serve you pepper and salt either, it’s self serve and I had to ask the waiter for the salt and pepper ( isn’t it common courtesy for a cafe or restaurant to have salt and pepper at their tables?)
The scrambled eggs were on a bed of bread and it was more bland than the fried eggs. (LKR 850)
I went two days later for their signature hot chocolate, Oreo cheesecake, lava cake, and blue berry cheesecake.
The hot chocolate (LKR 580) is supposed to be sugary. And this hot chocolate wasn’t chocolaty at all. I had to put sugar in to my hot chocolate and then stir it to get it to taste like hot chocolate.
The Oreo cheesecake (LKR 490) was the highlight for me here. This Oreo cheesecake consists of cream cheese and Oreos in the middle, and a piece of Oreo and whipped cream on top. And it was super creamy which I personally prefer on my cheesecakes.
This lava cake. (LKR 250) Let me tell you how cheated I felt while eating this. Lava itself means hot molten. Which means there needs to be chocolate oozing out of the cake. This cake was taken out of their freezer right in front of us and then put into their microwave, and the only thing I tasted here was just plain old chocolate cake. They didn’t even inform us while we just stood there buying it.
The blue berry cheesecake (LKR 490) was too sugary for me but my friend liked it. So I guess it goes with the preference ( given the fact that I don’t really like blue berry cheesecake) . It was creamy as well but the blue berry on top just gave it away for me. Also it was very cold even though it was popped into the microwave for about a minute.
We also went on to try the chicken tikka sandwich and veggie sandwich.
This chicken tikka sandwich (LKR 850) was drier than the rivers in Anuradhapura in the summer. The chicken was so dry that it took me so long to actually chew through all of it that I ended up not eating half of it. It was honestly a waste of time and my money , cause it was just dry chicken, tomatoes, onions and salad leaves with bread. This sandwich was served with a side of fries and coleslaw. I have no complaints about the coleslaw and the fries were crispy and salty as well.
This was the same case with my friend’s Marinated Vegetable sandwich (LKR 680). The Ciabatta Sandwich bread which was used was toasted on both sides and there was an even amount of marinated vegetables between. But none of this mattered as the vegetables were tasteless and bland. It seemed as if they were simply sautéed with no flavoring or anything of that sort. This was served with a handful of French fries and coleslaw, which didn’t excite us anyway. The wait wasn’t definitely worth it, neither was the money.
The took 40 minutes to bring out our orders except for the one time we got desserts. They told us it would take about 15 minutes and they took 25 minutes extra. And my friend and I had to sit there in hunger and I had to ask them thrice where my food was. And when I asked them why they’re taking so much time their answer was ‘ we use all fresh ingredients here so we make everything from scratch’. Honestly looking at the food, they didn’t look fresh or didn’t taste fresh. The whole thing except some of the desserts was just a waste of time.
